The e-mail service is available to all the Técnico community. It can be used by anyone who has a Técnico ID, is built on dedicated infrastructure and is the only personal email service supported. The user mailbox and e-mail address is personal and non-transferable. The individual use of other email services is possible but the DSI will not provide support for those.
On first activating the mail service, in the self-service web page, you will have to choose a personal email address. By default the address will have the form “names.chosen@tecnico.ulisboa.pt”, based on your name but with some freedom of choice to choose from. Alert: the address never uses the format “istxxxxx@tecnico.ulisboa.pt”.
Eash user’s mailbox is provided with 5 Gigabyte of initial quota space, anti-spam and anti-virus filters for your protection. Users are allowed to pick any favourite e-mail client (i.e. Webmail, Outlook, Thunderbird, Mail.app, etc).
Important information about the e-mail service:
The email service at Técnico, like email systems at other institutions, implements several checks against spam, forged emails, and phishing attempts. These are checks that have gradually made more strict and may lead to the rejection of misconfigured emails. Sometimes e-mails can be rejected and bounced to ithe sender, or classified as SPAM and moved to the “Junk” folder. Therefore we strongly recommend our users to bear in mind the following alerts when configuring the service:
- Spam avoidance systems and limits to messages sent
- Alert regarding email redirection
- Alert regarding the use of your Tecnico email address with third party email services
Using the email service:
There is a webmail service available, which is the simplest way to use the mail service. Authentication is done using the Técnico ID credentials in the Webmail page. It is possible to send and receive encrypted messages in webmail using the browser plugin Mailvelope.
